Sanchez and Ustero Beat the Top Two Seeds in Rotterdam
Ariana Sanchez and Andrea Ustero beat the top seeds on Saturday and the second seeds in Sunday's final in Rotterdam. In Bristol, Aimee Gibson and Catherine Rose kept their national title.
The lead note
In Rotterdam, Ariana Sanchez and Andrea Ustero beat the top seeds and then the second seeds on consecutive days: Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay on Saturday, 6-2, 6-3, and Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez in Sunday's final of the P2, 6-4, 6-4. In our English: "It was not easy to beat the top two seeds in the same tournament, but this should give us even more strength to keep working, thanks also to the help of our team and our families." It is their second title running, the FIP says, after the Major in Paris, and by its count the final was Sanchez's hundredth.
Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia won the men's final 6-3, 6-2 against Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz, who broke first. It was Stupaczuk and Sanz's first Premier Padel final as a pair, the FIP says, a week after they lost the final of the FIP Platinum in Lyon.
At home
Aimee Gibson and Catherine Rose are national champions again. At Rocket Padel Bristol on Sunday they won the women's final of the LTA Padel National Championships 6-2, 6-0. LTA Padel's report says they had dropped two games in their three matches before it, so they conceded four games in the tournament; at the World Cup qualifier in Madrid the week before, they conceded three.
They came in as the top seeds and the holders, champions at the same club last year. They were Great Britain's first pair in Madrid, and the women's team goes on to the FIP World Cup in Doha, from 2 to 7 November.
The men's final took two hours and 33 minutes. Christian Medina Murphy and Alfonso Patacho, the second seeds, lost the first set on a tie-break to Louie Harris and Alex Loughlan, the top seeds and holders, and won 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. In LTA Padel's report the winners say: "This title means a huge amount to us, particularly after the disappointment of last week's FIP World Cup Qualifiers, and to achieve it together makes it even more special." Great Britain's men lost their deciding tie there to Germany, 2-1.
The senior titles, from LTA Padel's results table: the over-50s women's to Julie Hanger and Stephanie Trill, the over-60s women's to Nicky Horn and Ashley Mears, and the over-60s men's to John Byrne and Colin McGill. LTA's table does not list the over-40s.
This week in the game
Padel's medal matches at the Asian Games were played in Nagoya on Saturday. Japan won the women's gold, 6-3, 6-4 against Indonesia, and Qatar the men's, 6-3, 6-1 against Malaysia. The bronze medals went to Indonesia's women and Iran's men.
The week ahead
The Premier Padel tour goes straight on to a P2 in Dusseldorf, main draw from Tuesday 6 to Sunday 11 October, where Brea and Triay, and Fede Chingotto and Ale Galan, defend the titles. A P1 in Milan follows, main draw from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 October.
