Spain's Women and Argentina's Men Win the Senior World Cup
The finals were played in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Spain's women beat the United States 3-0, and Argentina's men came from 1-2 down to beat Spain 3-2 at home. Europe's qualifier for the World Cup in Doha begins in Madrid today, with four places at stake.
The lead note
The women's final came first in Buenos Aires on Saturday 19 September, and Spain beat the United States 3-0 to win the FIP Senior World Cup. The International Padel Federation's report says: "España, que llegaba a la competición como campeona defensora, logró su cuarto título consecutivo en la FIP Senior World Cup". The English after each Spanish quotation in this edition is ours: Spain, who came to the competition as defending champions, won their fourth consecutive title at the FIP Senior World Cup. The FIP gives its basis alongside, the titles of 2018 and 2024 in Spain and of 2022 in Las Vegas. Lucia Sainz, whose Mediterranean Games gold at Taranto led this column on 1 September, won her match in the final.
The men's final followed, Argentina against Spain, and Argentina won it 3-2 at home. Every tie at the event is the best of five matches, one in each age band from 40+ to 60+. Argentina took the first match, Spain the next two, and Argentina the last two, the deciding one won by Lamperti and Gutierrez. The FIP counts it as Argentina's second title in a row, after La Nucia in 2024.
The bronze ties went to the Netherlands in the women's draw, 3-1 against Belgium after losing the first match, and to France in the men's, 3-0 against Italy.
The season's other World Cup is in Doha, and Europe's qualifier for it starts in Madrid today. It is played at the Padel G24 club from Tuesday 22 to Saturday 26 September, and the FIP's release of 7 August puts 55 national teams from 29 countries in it, playing for four places in Doha: two in the women's draw and two in the men's. Great Britain and Ireland have teams in both. Spain are on neither of the FIP's lists for Madrid. As №6 set out, Spain go to Doha defending the women's world title, and Argentina the men's.
LTA Padel named eight women and eight men for Great Britain on 7 September, and Padel Federation Ireland named seven women and eight men on 28 August.
At home
Aimee Gibson won the FIP Bronze in Casablanca with Eugenia Guimet, of Spain. LTA Padel, reporting the title on 14 September, gives the final as 6-4, 6-2, and the semi-final before it as 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 over three hours and 30 minutes. The FIP's own profile of Gibson records her as the winner, and its ranking had her 91st this morning. She is in Great Britain's women's squad for Madrid.
Great Britain's two teams at the Senior World Cup both finished their groups in Buenos Aires and went into the placement rounds. The women beat Ecuador 5-0 on Tuesday 15 September, finished second in their group to Belgium, and went into the FIP's bracket for places 13 to 16. The men lost 3-2 to Germany on Monday 14 September and 5-0 to Spain the next day, finished third in their group, and went into the bracket for places 17 to 20. The FIP had published no placings below the medal ties by the morning of 21 September, and we print none.
The Scottish Open, a Grade One event on the LTA's British Tour, was played at Racket Barn in Glasgow from 18 to 20 September, according to Tennis Scotland, which organises it. We have not established a result.
This week in the game
At the FIP Gold in Sao Paulo on Sunday, Jimena Velasco and Raquel Eugenio, the top seeds, beat Lorena Rufo and Jessica Castello, the second seeds, 7-5, 6-4. Velasco was on the losing side of the Mediterranean Games final at Taranto in August. In the FIP's report she gave the credit to her partner: "Sabíamos que sería una final complicada, pero Raquel jugó un partido extraordinario." We knew it would be a difficult final, but Raquel played an extraordinary match.
David Gala and Maxi Arce, the second seeds, won the final 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 24 minutes. The FIP's report notes that in one week Gala has won two FIP Gold titles on two continents, in Bucharest with Enzo Jensen and in Sao Paulo with Arce. The same report quotes Arce: "Conseguir este título ha sido increíble." Winning this title has been incredible.
No other Cupra FIP Tour result from the week is reported here; the FIP's event pages for the other finals did not reach the standard we print to.
